ELECTRICAL (CLICK TO SEE SOME EXAMPLES)

Poor contacts, overloading and similar problems usually generate heat and therefore are easily identifiable with Thermal Imaging. These problems are not readily identifiable with standard electrical testing. Some types of electrical equipment that are suitable for surveying include, over head transmission lines, sub stations, switches fuses and circuit breakers. Component failure is more liable during periods of high load, which frequently occurs when the plant is in full operation. Thermal Imaging can identify these problem areas before failure occurs. Also the ability to measure the temperature of the "hot spot" gives an indication of the severity of the fault. This allows maintenance to be carried out in a structured fashion, rather than merely reacting to breakdowns. This can save money in terms of damage to capital equipment, loss of production and more efficient use of maintenance resources.

Thermal surveys can be carried out in a fraction of the time of normal electrical testing and a small to medium factory can often be surveyed in a single day. Thermal Imaging is not a replacement for normal electrical testing but a valued addition.

INSULATION (CLICK TO TO SEE EXAMPLE)

Heating costs money and any loss represents a financial loss. many processes in industry involve heating systems and any failure in the integrity of the insulation used is an irreclaimable expense. Defective areas of insulation can not always be identified visually as they are in areas of limited access. As Thermal Imaging is a non-contact technique, it can identify these areas from a distance.

The cost of heating buildings during the winter represents a significant cost to the occupier. Poor insulation can easily be identified using Thermal Imaging, saving costs, apart from the obvious environmental benefits. The perception of a buildings insulation properties might be radically different from reality. Expensive remedial work could be undertaken for no reason and conversely buildings that are supposed to be up to standard might not be. The workmanship of builder as varies widely and it is difficult to check on all aspects during the construction process. Thermal imaging is a quick and efficient way of safe guarding against this.

There are many other applications in which Thermal Imaging is of use, space precludes listing them all. But a few other areas are, leak detection, refrigeration plants, detecting hidden pipe work etc.

The heating pattern of a transformer is easily detected using Thermal Imaging. Transformer malfunction can prove costly in terms of loss of production etc, without the associated repair costs.
